A: You should have a dentist look at this situation. If the crown is moving, the seal is broken, and it is possible to get food and bacteria underneath it potentially causing decay.

Q: Hi Jay,Your office is always clean and bright and your staff is friendly. I have a question about my 9 year-old. What is the most dental-friendly option for when he has a sore throat and wants a cough drop to go to sleep with? I assume sugarless ones are preferred and nothing at all after brushing is ideal, but do you have a recommendation for something to keep his throat moist and comfortable until he goes to sleep? Jeanne

A: For a short period of time sugarless cough drops should be fine. We hesitate to recommend falling asleep with a cough drop due to the potential choking hazard. You can also allow him to chew a sugarless gum with Zylatol to increase saliva flow. We hope he feels better soon!

Q: What is the connection between sinus pain and my teeth ? An attack of sinusitis makes my teeth hurt.

A: Many root canals have been done in the name of “sinusitis.” When your sinuses are inflamed or full of drainage it can put pressure on your upper teeth (especially the back teeth that have roots closest to the sinus). The teeth can move slightly downward causing them to hit slightly harder together when you close or bite. This new and constant contact can create tooth sensitivity or pain. It is important to mention to your dentist if you are experiencing tooth pain and have had recent sinus problems.

Q: Is there such thing as flossing too often or with too much pressure? Sometimes I have that hard to get piece of meat and floss until it comes out and causes bleeding.

A: You can actually cut your gum while flossing. In the situation you are asking about, it is difficult to tell if the bleeding was caused by the meat, aggressive flossing, or some other gum/periodontal involvement. If you notice bleeding while flossing daily, you should consider getting a periodontal evaluation by a dentist.
